Australia’s high performing terminal genetics for fast growing lambs that are trait leaders in meat quality.
FocusPrime is a terminal composite designed to provide high performing finished lambs which are trait leaders in meat quality.
The FocusPrime is a terminal composite sire designed to provide high performing finished lambs which excel in meat quality. The FocusPrime utilises the best available terminal genetics from Australia and New Zealand into a single package.
The breeding program places most emphasis on economically important traits including lamb survival, birth weight, lamb growth, meat yield and meat-eating quality. Due to their smaller birth weights and vigorous disposition coupled with fast early growth, the FocusPrime is an ideal sire for maidens and ewe lambs.
The breed’s high eating quality originates from participation in a 7-year programme that resulted in genomic predictions for intramuscular fat, tenderness, pH and colour stability. The FocusPrime remains the top performing terminal sire in the 3-year New Zealand Terminal Worth Sire Summary. These traits are also reflected in the Australian genetic evaluation (LAMBPLAN) with the majority of animals being in the top 10% of all terminal animals for Intramuscular Fat.
Karrawarra Pastoral is currently involved in a joint project with MLA to measure carcase and eating quality traits across the progeny of 300 commercial ewes joined to FocusPrime sires.

“The FocusPrime rams we bought in Feb 2020 have produced high growth progeny with remarkable survival rates out of easy doing highly fertile Highlander Ewes. The Xbred lambs have great hybrid vigour looks with square backs and early maturing attributes. We also found Hannah very helpful and feel confident she knows what it takes to breed a ram that suits our business. ”

“It is hard not to do the figures, 10% /year over 8000 ewes is another 800 lambs and at 200 bucks, there’s another $160 000 in your pocket. It’s pretty simple if you get the right genetics. That was the main driving focus.”
“Our ewe weights and feed bills are coming down, and our scanning percentages and survival is going up.”
“One of the things I like about Highlanders is they put a lot of emphasis on mothering ability and they cull for it.”
“The Highlanders are excellent mothers from day-dot. The weaning percentage is what’s really amazing. We lose very few lambs with very little input,”
